Opening statement: God creates the heavens and the earth (1:1)
The earth is formless, void, and dark; the Spirit of God hovers over the waters (1:2)
Six days of creation, each introduced by โAnd God saidโ:
Day 1: Creation of light; separation of light from darkness (1:3โ5)
Day 2: Creation of the sky; separation of waters above and below (1:6โ8)
Day 3: Waters; appearance of dry land; creation of vegetation (1:9โ13)
Day 4: Creation of sun, moon, and stars to govern day and night (1:14โ19)
Day 5: Creation of Sea creatures and birds (1:20โ23)
Day 6: Creation of land animals and humankind in Godโs image; command to multiply and rule (1:24โ31)
Day 7: God rests, blesses, and sanctifies the seventh day (2:1โ3)
Eden & Creation of Humanity
Introduction: โThese are the generations of the heavens and the earthโฆโ (2:4)
Description of the earth before cultivated plants and rain (2:5โ6)
Creation of man (Adam) from the dust; God breathes life into him (2:7)
Planting of the Garden in Eden; placement of man in the garden (2:8โ9)
Description of the rivers flowing from Eden (2:10โ14)
Godโs command: Don't eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (2:15โ17)
Creation of animals; Adam names them (2:18โ20)
Creation of woman (Eve) from Adamโs rib; institution of marriage (2:21โ25)
Fall and Fallout
Introduction of the serpent as a cunning creature (3:1)
The serpent tempts Eve; she and Adam eat from the forbidden tree (3:1โ6)
Their eyes are opened; they realize their nakedness and make coverings (3:7)
God confronts Adam and Eve; they confess and shift blame (3:8โ13)
God pronounces curses:
On the serpent: enmity with the womanโs offspring (3:14โ15)
Then Eve: increased pain in childbirth, relational consequences (3:16)
Then Adam: cursed ground, toil and Death (3:17โ19)
Adam names his wife Eve; God makes garments for them (3:20โ21)
God banishes them from Eden, placing cherubim to guard the tree of life (3:22โ24)
